Protective Masks

Hello and thank you for coming to check out Joanna Pearce KW. I originally thought that I would be creating this website to showcase my photography, sewing, and knitting projects. My true passion in crafting is for upcycling and sustainable solutions – and making something unused into something new and loved. With the current pandemic underway, I have focussed my creative efforts into finding ways to help people stay safe.

the first fitted masks I made – a set for my family

Soon after I started to make masks to donate, I made some fitted masks for my family. I started to get requests from friends. I have put this website together to make it easier to learn about the options for mask customization, pricing, and currently available pre-made masks.

Click here to see current pre-made masks that are available for purchase.

Styles:

I currently offer five styles. Each has 5 different sizes and can be customized to your tastes. I offer these styles because I feel good about their fit and comfort.

Fitted Mask with nose wire and pocket

Fitted Mask with nose wire and NO pocket (reversible)

Hybrid mask with nose wire and no pocket. (reversible)

Simple 3D mask with nose wire and NO pocket (not reversible)

Simple 3D mask with nose wire and transparent window for lip and expression reading. These cost slightly more at $16/mask. Available in large youth/small adult, regular adult, and large adult sizes.

Hybrid Masks

Two sides of a reversible adult sized. mask.
Two sides of a reversible preschool sized mask.

Nice tight fit across the nose, fitted through the chin and cheeks.

This is my new favourite for sure! It has the best features of the fitted and 3D in one light mask. It has the benefit of a fitted shape through the cheeks and chin (for a sleek look) but a seamless nose piece that is the tightest fitting I have found for no fog glasses.

My testers agree that this is a great pattern! All except for two said it is the best – those exceptions included a small toddler who wanted the nose piece not to be tight and an adult with a longer nose than average (he said that it ended up tied with the fitted).

See above for pricing and sizing.

Fitted Masks

Even lying flat, you can see how the shaping of this mask would naturally fit around a face.
It is easy to slide a filter into the pocket between the inner and outer layers.
Shaping of the nose and contained nose wire helps keep glasses low fog and the top of the mask away from your eyelashes.

This is the mask style I like best. The curves make it form to the face and the raised nose section make for what I find most comfortable in the styles I have tried. It doesn’t move around and it works with a variety of fabric choices

  • Built in nose wire
  • Pocket for a filter
  • Unless otherwise requested, this comes with t-shirt ties. I like how ties pull the mask in for a more customized fit but I know others prefer the ease of elastic. I find T-shirt ties don’t slip, have some stretch, and are more comfortable than bias tape ties.
  • I have had success using stretch t-shirt ties for young child masks so that they have independence putting the mask on and off. They will need help tying the mask initially, but after that it should just slip on and off over their head.
  • Can be made with a variety of fabric types (but will always contain 2 layers of woven cotton as that is what is recommended for safety)
  • This mask can be made as an upcycle. If you are interested in sustainability or making me excited about your project, let me know and I’ll tell you about options and do what I can to satisfy your fandom/likes
  • I will line with 100% quilter’s cotton as a default. If you request it, I will line with flannel. (I am easily able to customize this according to your preference)

I now offer this style as a simpler version with NO POCKET. I like it better than the Simple 3D mask for shape (it is a personal preference for sure!) and it has the same light simple feel. It still has all of the features as above except the pocket. Price is the same as above but this style is reversible and you can have two looks in a single mask!

Current Woven Fabrics

Simple 3D Mask

When lying flat, you can see how this style would fit around a face and not just be pulled across it.
You can easily compare this shape to the one above when worn by the same lovely model.

This is my preferred simple pattern. It shapes better to the face than any other simple pattern that I have tried and is light and not bulky. It can only be made with woven fabrics as the crispness is needed for form integrity.

  • Built in nose wire
  • No pocket for a filter
  • Made with two layers of woven 100% quilting cotton
  • Unless otherwise requested, this comes with ear elastics. I have two different styles. The first is a soft and very stretchy surgical mask elastic. The other is a slightly firmer thin hair tie style elastic. Let me know your preference (or if you prefer t-shirt ties).
  • Feedback from people is that they prefer this style if they want a bit more room to breathe inside. If you feel claustrophobic in a mask, this might be the style for you!

Current Woven Fabrics

You can now order this mask with a transparent window for lip reading or expression reading. All of the features of the simple 3D mask with added functionality of being transparent.

Additional Notes:

Masks will be made and fabrics will be reserved on a first come first serve basis. If a fabric is depleted on an order before yours, I will contact you for another fabric selection.

*NEW* I have recently streamlined prices to include the cost of all fabrics. Prices are now based solely on the size of mask you need regardless of style/fabric.

If you struggle to picture what a fabric would look like made into a mask, check out the gallery page. It might help you picture your favourite fabrics as a mask!

Shipping is available at actual cost of shipping plus packing materials. Up to 6 Masks fit in a large envelope for lettermail. In Ontario and Quebec (and probably beyond) this costs $2.50 for 1-2 masks or $4.00 for 3-6 masks including taxes and packing materials.
